Our Process

How We Review Software

Every recommendation on FieldStack follows the same process. Here is exactly how we decide what to recommend and what to skip.

Step 1: We Sign Up and Use the Tool

We do not review software from screenshots or marketing pages. We sign up for a free trial or request a demo account. We click through every major feature. We test it the way a contractor would: create a quote, schedule a job, send an invoice, and check the mobile app.

If a tool does not offer a free trial and will not give us a test account, we note that as a negative. Contractors should be able to try before they buy.

Step 2: We Check Real User Reviews

Our experience is one data point. We also read what real users say across multiple sources:

  • G2 and Capterra for verified business user reviews
  • App Store and Google Play for mobile app feedback
  • Contractor forums and Facebook groups for unfiltered opinions from people in the trades
  • Reddit for candid discussions about pricing changes, support issues, and switching experiences

If 20 users say the mobile app crashes constantly, we report that even if our personal experience was fine. Patterns in user feedback matter more than one person's test.

Step 3: We Evaluate Against Trade-Specific Needs

A painting company and a landscaping company have different needs. We do not use a generic checklist. For each trade, we test against the features that matter most for that specific type of business.

For example, when reviewing software for painting contractors, we focus on estimating speed, production-rate accuracy, proposal quality, and follow-up automation. When reviewing for landscaping companies, we focus on route optimization, recurring scheduling, and crew time tracking.

Step 4: We Compare Pricing Honestly

We check the real cost, not just the advertised starting price. That means:

  • Actual monthly cost at realistic user counts (not just the 1-user entry price)
  • Whether there is a long-term contract or you can cancel any time
  • Onboarding fees, setup fees, and training costs
  • Payment processing fees (some tools charge 2-3% per transaction)
  • What features are gated behind higher-priced plans

If a tool does not publish pricing, we note that as a downside. Hidden pricing usually means it is expensive.

Step 5: We Write It in Plain Language

Our reviews are written at a 3rd to 5th grade reading level. Not because contractors are not smart. Because busy people do not have time to decode jargon. We use short sentences, clear comparisons, and specific recommendations.

Every review includes:

  • A quick answer at the top so you do not have to read 2,000 words if you just want the recommendation
  • Honest pros and cons for every tool
  • A clear statement of who should use it and who should skip it
  • A verdict at the bottom with our final recommendation

What We Do Not Do

  • We do not accept payment from software companies in exchange for reviews or rankings.
  • We do not let affiliate commission rates influence our recommendations.
  • We do not review tools we have not actually tested.
  • We do not pretend every tool is great. If a tool has serious problems, we say so.

How Often We Update

Software changes fast. We review our published guides at least every six months and update them when pricing changes, new features launch, or user sentiment shifts. Every page shows the date it was last updated.

If you notice something outdated, email us at hello@fieldstack.pro and we will fix it.
